BTS: Flavor Creation

The Beginning

So we knew we wanted to create hydration enhancers that not only tasted great, but would help support people to also feel great. Having something that tasted, looked, and felt great was key to help people actually reach their water intake goals. Because believe it or not, a lot of people don't like the taste of water.

As water snobs as well, we knew we had our work cut out for us. But what flavors would we even use? Coming out with our first round, there felt like there was so much pressure to start with the perfect flavors as a base for our company, to show people who Morning Light was.

So we went to the drawing board, put our work boots on, and got started.

Flavor Research

Originally, we were going to do a single flavor profile, think Lemon or Blueberry. But we are extra, and we wanted to do something that was a little more interesting. So we searched high and low for flavor combinations that jumped out to us and created a master list. While there was so many options, we needed only 2. Reaching out to friends and family was a great way to collect data on what we found people were drawn too. If we got an "Ooooo! That sounds so good!" then it probably meant we were onto something.

We chose to bring it down to one Citrus flavor and then a Berry. That way we got the best of both worlds, and were able to cater to different taste pallets.

We came up with our first flavor profile: Pineapple, Orange, Guava.

It was inspired by the classic POG drink that we grew up enjoying and reminded us of family trips to Hawaii. We also opted to switch Passionfruit with Pineapple, as it is one of our favorite fruits!

The second flavor was an interesting and slightly adventurous flavor profile: Strawberry, Watermelon, Rose.

This flavor was inspired by summer picnics at the beach or by the pool. We wanted something juicy! The rose was an idea that we had to elevate and create this subtle floral sweetness to the profile. Rose can be tricky however, if its not done right, it can come out soapy. So we had to be very intentional!

Next Steps

So we had our two flavors, yay! Now it came time to actually making them!

We set out to the lab and went through several different samples. Each time we sent them back with a long list of notes and changes. But we were getting there! It was so exciting to actually see our vision come to life!

For our finishing touches we headed to our lab and did another round of 5-7 taste tests in the span of a couple hours. We looked at tweaking the colors, how each flavor comes out, worked on the after taste. All the nitty gritty things.

In the end, our team finally came up with our final recipe and flavors! The flavors were done and were going to be gone through different phases of getting our nutritional panel set up, and the recipe laid out for mass production.

We were one step closer!

Creating The Names

Now it was time to come up with our names. We decided to have one worded flavor names to keep it simple and elegant. But how do you choose one word to encompass an entire flavor combination? Simply the Vibe.

We broke down each flavor into what comes to mind, what the flavor notes were, the color, the smell, the images that surfaced. Then a list was made like when we were deciding on flavors, and slowly went through the list one by one. It took over several meetings. The final winners were Sol and Blush.

And thus the World of Sol and Blush were created.
